The auto-ID technology consist on a set of hardware, software and network devices and standards aiming to allow the unique identification, tracking and location of physical objects or persons and provide architecture to easily and quickly find and share their related information. It is an extension of the Radio Frequency Identification technology RFID ; that adds coding standards, computer networking capabilities and even a computer language for structuring and storing physical objects' information, called Physical Mark up Language PML ; . The RFID is a technology that allows objects to be tagged with specialized micro-chips. The chips can incorporate batteries or be powered up by the readers through electromagnetic induction, and can incorporate telemetric sensors to measure relevant object characteristics like temperature or humidity. The chips are programmed to identify themselves with a unique code, normally called Electronic Product Code EPC ; . This work uses the term Electronic Identification Code EIC ; with the same meaning, since some chips could be attached to people e.g. patients or medical personnel. The EIC is a 64-96-bit number that, like the barcode, identifies an item's manufacturer and product category, but also adds a third set of digits to uniquely identify each item. Some special radio devices readers ; are used to remotely query the chips get their EIC and telemetric values. Readers are connected to a LAN and managed by a centralized software program, which access the web to further the information searching. This software registers the transactions and finds the required information through the Internet by accessing a specialized server called Object Name Server ONS ; which translates EIC into unique identifiers and database addresses where objects' characteristics are stored.
